You’ve probably seen prompts like these. The idea is simple: give the AI a role, and it performs better. Like hiring a specialist instead of asking a generalist.
But does it actually work? The answer is more complicated than the internet suggests.
What Role Prompting Is
Role prompting tells the AI to adopt a specific persona when responding. Instead of answering as a generic assistant, it answers as a particular type of expert, professional, or character.
Learn Prompting defines it as guiding an LLM to draw on knowledge and communication styles associated with a specific role. The theory: when you tell an AI to “act as a doctor,” it adjusts vocabulary, assumptions, and depth of explanation to match that role.

Common Mistakes
The Generic Expert
“Act as an expert” adds nothing. Expert in what? Every role should be specific enough to provide meaningful guidance.
The Contradicting Persona

Over-Constraining
